Understanding Trauma:

The Backpack You Carry

Trauma is not just an event; it's the lasting impact of an experience that overwhelms your ability to cope. It's the way your nervous system gets stuck in a state of high alert, long after the threat is gone. Understanding the type of trauma you've experienced can be a powerful first step toward healing.

What Is Trauma

Whether your pain stems from a single overwhelming event, repeated stress over time, or a series of deeply rooted experiences beginning in early life, its impact can linger long after the moment has passed. At ReLabeled Therapy, we understand that trauma looks different for everyone.

This is the result of a single, highly stressful event. It could be a car accident, a natural disaster, or a sudden loss.  The impact is significant, but it stems from one specific moment in time.

  • You might find yourself replaying the event in your mind, feeling jumpy, or struggling to sleep.

This occurs when a person is exposed to repeated, ongoing traumatic events. Examples include living in a war zone, enduring long-term abuse, or experiencing a chronic, life-threatening illness.

  • You may feel like you’re always waiting for the next bad thing to happen, unable to relax even in safe situations.

This is the most profound form of trauma, resulting from repeated and pervasive trauma that occurs within the context of interpersonal relationships, often starting in childhood. Examples include neglect, emotional abuse, or living with an unpredictable caregiver. Complex trauma often affects a person's sense of self and their ability to form healthy relationships.

  • You might struggle with feelings of shame, have a hard time trusting others, or wonder who you truly are without the weight of your past.

Trauma Doesn’t Stay in One Place—It Ripples Through the Mind, Body, and Spirit, Often Showing Up in Ways We Don’t Expect.

The Ripple Effect: How Trauma Affects Everything

My body feels tense all the time, like it’s bracing for something.

You may experience chronic pain, stomach issues, fatigue, or a constant feeling of being on edge.

Sometimes, I feel like I’m watching my life from the outside.

Your thoughts can become a battlefield. You might struggle with intrusive thoughts, flashbacks, difficulty concentrating, or a feeling of being detached from your own body.

I’m just going through the motions, and I don’t have the energy to do the things I used to enjoy.

Daily life can feel overwhelming. Tasks that were once easy may now seem impossible. You might struggle with work, school, or even simple errands.

I want to be close to people, but a part of me is always waiting for them to hurt me.

Trauma can make it difficult to trust others and feel safe in relationships. You may find yourself pulling away from loved ones or constantly fearing abandonment.

I feel broken. I wonder if I’ll ever feel normal again.

Traumatic experiences can shatter our sense of self-worth. You may struggle with shame, guilt, and a feeling that you are fundamentally flawed.
